Nestled in the serene Devon Valley of Stellenbosch, Clos Malverne Winery began its journey in 1995, founded by Seymour and Sophia Pritchard. With a vision for crafting premium wines and a commitment to excellence, the couple established a brand that would create a feeling of luxury and quality to its consumers.
The Devon Valley’s unique climate provided the ideal conditions for cultivating premium grapes for wine production. In the 1990s, Clos Malverne expanded its vineyard plantations, introducing Pinotage alongside other red varietals like Merlot and Shiraz. Careful site selection based on soil composition ensured the meticulous cultivation of grapes, laying the foundation for the winery’s enduring success.
In 2010, Suzanne Coetzee took the reins of winemaking at Clos Malverne, continuing the legacy established by her husband, Charl, who had crafted wines there for three years. Suzanne’s talent and passion for winemaking flourished, and in 2016, she ventured into creating her own label, Nuiba wines, within the Clos Malverne cellar. Balancing management responsibilities and winemaking, Suzanne’s journey was a testament to her dedication and innovation.
By 2023, the story came full circle. Suzanne, now a mother of four daughters, purchased the Clos Malverne winery and united the Clos Malverne and Nuiba wines under a single banner: Nuiba Brands. This new chapter marked a seamless blend of tradition and forward-thinking innovation. With decades of expertise and market insight, Seymour and Sophia entrusted their legacy to Suzanne, confident that the winery’s future was in capable hands.
The philosophy behind Nuiba Brands reflects the essence of its predecessors: a commitment to retaining the primary flavours of the grapes with minimal intervention during the winemaking process. Fermentation takes place in open fermenters with frequent punch downs, followed by gentle pressing in basket presses. The wines are then aged in older barrels, allowing for malolactic fermentation and the development of rich, complex flavours.
Quality remains the cornerstone of Nuiba Brands, ensuring that every bottle reflects the dedication and passion of those behind it. As the winery moves forward, the union of Clos Malverne and Nuiba wines under Suzanne’s stewardship promises a bright future, where tradition and innovation coexist harmoniously.
Nuiba Brands continues to honour the legacy of family, vision, and commitment, crafting wines that capture the spirit of Stellenbosch and the artistry of winemaking.
