South Africa, a land of great contrast and beauty is known for its sunny skies, sea, safaris, braaivleis, rugby and its spas.
State-of-the-art, cutting-edge, deluxe spas all situated in exquisite locations, be it in a city, town or out in the bush, all offering a range of spa spoils and treatments. In the superabundance of spas there is only one that can lay claim to operating from the heart of an old defunct power station – the Turbine Spa, housed in one of South Africa’s most unusual hotels.

A derelict power station with massive turbines, steel pillars and pipes on Thesen Islands in Knysna, that popular tourist town on the Garden Route was transformed into the extraordinary Turbine Boutique Hotel and Spa – a flawless fusion of the old industrial heritage building with the modern luxury accommodation. The 5-star boutique hotel’s luxurious accommodation comprises 26 luxury and standard suites, a honeymoon suite and two self-contained suites adjacent to the hotel. It also offers conference facilities, two restaurants, the Island Café and Gastro Pub and its on-site Turbine Spa.
A finalist, for a number of years of the Les Nouvelles Esthetiques Spa Awards (a prestigious annual event that recognises spas that deliver outstanding service, innovative treatments and unique experiences) The Turbine Spa, one of the finest on the Garden Route offers a range of beauty and body treatments, facials, manicures, pedicures and grooming services.
Open daily, Monday through to Sunday (including public holidays) from 08h00 until 17h00 (and later during peak periods), the Spa features single and double treatment rooms and an exotically mosaic-tiled Rasul Steam Room for a steamy Arabian bathing ritual that is perfect for couples.
“This is where you can pamper your senses and treat your body to a few hours of blissful relaxation” according to Lyrisia Harker, the Spa Manager. “Along with our spa experiences we offer BABOR and Theravine facials and our expert therapists tailor each treatment to a guests specific needs. We proudly partner with BABOR, using its range of products in many of our signature massage and facial treatments and also with the award-winning, South African Skin and Body Care brand, TheraVine™.
The Spa’s treatment menu is extensive. Along with the Turbine Pamper Packages (inclusive of a delicious Island Café lunch), the Couple’s Connect – a combined body massage, a BABOR facial and a steaming Rasul session – is a firm favourite; another is one of the Turbine’s Signature treatments: the Knysna Journey – a 90-minute spoil of a relaxing foot scrub, massage and a full body massage. From the Turbine Body Collection there’s a fabulous full body exfoliation wrap with a relaxing scalp massage followed by a nourishing body butter application. There are also deluxe BABOR and Theravine facials, several different massages, a lengthy list of grooming services and various manicure and pedicure treatments while the Turbine Gents collection features a 60 or 90-minute anti-ageing Gents Facial, a Gents Mani and an hour-long Gents Medi Pedi.
The Turbine Boutique Hotel and Spa has successfully embraced the past and woven it into the fabric of the future and delivers the ultimate in pampering at The Turbine Spa.
