A Cape Town Tradition

Now in its second decade, RMB UTCT has grown from humble beginnings into one of Africa’s most respected endurance events. Local support has been central to its success.

“The support along the route is a major part of what the event is all about and what it means to the community,” says Race Director Stuart McConnachie.

Six Races, One Epic Destination

RMB UTCT offers six distances to suit every level of athlete, from first-time trail runners to elite professionals. All routes start and finish at the Race Village, winding through the iconic peaks and valleys of Table Mountain National Park.

From Local Vision to Global Recognition

What began in 2014 with only 16 finishers of the inaugural 100km race has grown into one of Africa’s premier sporting spectacles.
Today, RMB UTCT draws 2 800 runners from more than 55 countries and sits proudly alongside the world’s top ultra-trail events as part of the World Trail Majors.

“We knew that if we could secure the permits to host this event across Table Mountain, it would become one of the best-known ultra-trail races in the world. That vision has now become reality,” says McConnachie.

Global Reach, Local Impact

Each year, RMB UTCT generates around R150 million for the local economy, benefitting Cape Town’s accommodation, hospitality, transport, and tourism sectors.

“Trail running has become one of the most powerful expressions of South Africa’s spirit — resilience, connection, and exploration,” says Michael Edwards, RMB Sponsorship Marketing Lead.
“RMB UTCT doesn’t only showcase world-class athletes. It celebrates our landscapes and helps position South African trail running on the global stage.”

Commitment to Conservation

Beyond sport, RMB UTCT demonstrates a deep respect for nature. The event raises awareness and funds for Table Mountain and SANParks Honorary Rangers conservation programmes, helping preserve these world-class trails for future generations.

“Ultra-trail running isn’t just a sport; it’s a journey of self-discovery,” adds McConnachie. “Our routes push runners to their limits while surrounding them with some of the most awe-inspiring scenery on Earth.”
