As Cape Town prepares for its busiest time of year, the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC) is getting ready to welcome a surge of local and international visitors. Based on tourist arrival statistics released by the Department of Tourism in November, this festive season is expected to be especially busy for the city’s major attractions.
“December in Cape Town is truly spectacular, and Table Mountain, as one of the New7Wonders of Nature, is deservedly at the top of every visitor’s itinerary,” says Wahida Parker, Managing Director of TMACC.
With holidaymakers arriving to enjoy the outdoors, beaches and city lifestyle, roads become busier and popular attractions reach capacity quickly. TMACC has shared practical tips to help visitors enjoy a smooth, memorable experience.
Plan your visit carefully
The Cableway is extremely popular during summer, with thousands of visitors arriving daily. Arriving early for the first cable car or later in the afternoon often reduces waiting time. The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway app, available on the App Store and Google Play, provides real-time updates on weather conditions, operating status and queue times.
Use park and ride options
Parking along Tafelberg Road is limited. Visitors are encouraged to use the free Cableway shuttle, which runs every 20 minutes between the Lower Tafelberg Road parking area and the Lower Station. Those using e-hailing services can help reduce congestion by being dropped off at the Lower Tafelberg Road parking area and taking the shuttle.
Buy tickets online
Purchasing tickets online saves time and money. Online tickets remain valid for seven days, allowing visitors to reschedule easily if plans change.
Choose Fast Track when time is tight
Fast Track tickets allow visitors to bypass the queue and board the cable cars more quickly. This option is ideal for travellers working around busy itineraries.
Understand capacity management
On high-demand days, access is limited to ticket holders only and onsite ticket sales may be suspended. Buying tickets online in advance is strongly advised.
Dress appropriately and stay hydrated
Weather conditions on Table Mountain change quickly. It may be warm in the city and cold or windy at the summit. Visitors should wear layers, stay hydrated and choose suitable walking or hiking shoes. Sandals and slipslops increase the risk of slipping on rocky terrain.
Ways to make your visit even more memorable
Hike one way, ride the other
Visitors can hike up routes such as Platteklip Gorge and enjoy a relaxed cable car ride down, or take the cable car up and walk down at their own pace. Regular visitors can also use the Cable Card, which offers one return trip per day for a year.
Explore the summit trails
The summit features easy walking paths that allow visitors to explore indigenous flora, rock formations and scenic viewpoints. Maclear’s Beacon is a popular stop for photographs.
Experience sunrise or sunset
Early risers can catch the first cable car at 08h00 and enjoy a peaceful morning on the summit. Sunset visitors should plan for the last cable car up at 20h00 until the end of January 2026. The final ride down is at 21h00.
Bring the whole family
Table Mountain is ideal for families. Children can enjoy the cable car ride while learning about the mountain’s biodiversity. Free guided walks run daily, weather permitting, on the hour from 09h00 to 15h00.
Respect and protect the mountain
Visitors are encouraged to use designated bins and help keep the mountain clean. Small actions help preserve this natural landmark for future generations.
Relax with food and refreshments
Food outlets at the summit offer meals, snacks and drinks. These spaces offer a chance to rest, cool down, and enjoy views of the city.
Shop local at the summit
The Shop at the Top offers locally sourced keepsakes and gifts, allowing visitors to support local producers while commemorating their visit.
Capture the moment
The New7Wonders of Nature photo frame, located next to the Shop at the Top, offers panoramic views of the Twelve Apostles mountain range and the Atlantic Ocean. It is one of the most popular photo spots on the mountain.
“Table Mountain is more than a backdrop to our city. It is where people relax, connect and enjoy a view like no other,” says Parker. “This year, we encourage everyone to make the mountain part of their holiday plans through adventure, conservation and appreciation of its beauty.”
