Hylton Turvey is the visionary behind Bahari Bay’s acclaimed onsite Mountain Biking Trail in KwaZulu Natal’s picturesque South Coast estate. With over two decades of trail-building experience, Turvey has revolutionized the local mountain biking scene with his innovative and artistic approach, creating a destination that attracts riders from near and far.
Hylton Turvey’s passion for the outdoors was ignited during his childhood in the Karkloof mountains, where his parents instilled in him a love for exploration and adventure. He recalls, “I got my first BMX when I was about 3 or 4 years old. Growing up on a farm provided ample space for creativity, and I, alongside my friends, transformed our backyard into a biking playground, building ramps and jumps that fueled my early fascination with trail creation.”
With over two decades dedicated to trail building, Turvey considers himself an artist in shaping landscapes that offer both challenge and exhilaration. From pioneering projects in the Karkloof and Jonkershoek to developing trail networks across Gauteng and Mpumalanga, each endeavor has been an opportunity to craft trails that blend with their natural surroundings.
“The Bahari Bay Mountain Biking Trail represents a culmination of my experience and passion for trail construction,” Turvey explains. Nestled amidst tropical forests and offering sweeping ocean views, the trail is designed to cater to riders of all levels. Its flow and integration with the surrounding environment create a unique experience, adapting to the rider’s style and promising an adventure that is both thrilling and accessible.
Building the Bahari Bay trail presented several challenges, from navigating sandy coastal soils to sculpting paths through dense forests and weathering unpredictable storms. “The soil on the coast is very sandy with no clay, so shaping was difficult. Scouting any trail is always a big challenge. Figuring out what can work due to many environmental factors plays a huge part in designing the trail as well. I put a lot of effort into that to make sure the trail is low impact on the environment,” Turvey notes. However, these obstacles fueled his creativity, leading to innovative solutions such as wooden bridges and rock armoring that enhance both the trail’s durability and the safety of its riders.
The Bahari Bay Trail has not only transformed the local mountain biking scene but has also become a a must-visit for outdoor enthusiasts seeking new adventures. The positive reception has rekindled an interest for outdoor activities, creating a sense of community among riders and nature enthusiasts alike, garnering interest from the likes of the South Coast Striders running club and local mountain biking groups.
“I had some feedback, and most people couldn’t believe that a trail like this exists in the area. It seemed to create new excitement among the community for riding, with some people saying they’re going to dust off their bikes and start riding again, which was special to hear. I hope the trail will make people want to get out and be in nature and forget about their phones and all their distractions,” Turvey shares.
Turvey believes that whether you are a seasoned rider or a novice seeking new challenges, the Bahari Bay trail is worth experience=ing first-hand and promises to be an unforgettable journey through lush landscapes.
