The southern tip of Africa is known for its cool ocean winds and marginal soils. And it’s thanks to this unique terroir that Sauvignon blanc wines emanating from the Agulhas Wine Ward have gained prominence in recent years.
But wineries such as the Black Oystercatcher Wines, a boutique family-run wine farm situated in the Overberg country, are now so much more than a single style of wine. In fact, the Black Oystercatcher Wines recently launched a new vintage of its Rosé – after a five-year absence. The Black Oystercatcher Rosé, made from Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, captures the intense fruity flavours that are so unique to the area, with aromas of gooseberry and passionfruit. It’s now back on the Black Oystercatcher wine list due to popular demand.
The 2024 Black Oystercatcher Rosé joins other favourites crafted by winemaker Dirk Human. That includes the Black Oystercatcher Sauvignon Blanc, the Triton (100% Shiraz) and the Cap Classique Brut Rosé. Then there’s the reserve range, led by the Reserve Sauvignon Blanc, Blanc Fumé and Semillon Reserve.
These wines are characterised by the ardent flavours and distinct minerality captured in the smaller-than-usual berries, formed by the terroir. Once the grapes are ripe come harvest season in February and March, they are handpicked and worked with in the softest possible way. The Black Oystercatcher has adopted their own wine-making philosophy: To work the land with the least possible interference in the most natural way.
It’s a destination
The Black Oystercatcher Wines is more than a winery: They’re a destination. A variety of wine tastings are on offer on this fifth-generation family farm, between the towns of Bredasdorp and Elim. They’re tailored especially for the wine lover and connoisseur, from the premium tasting, to comparative tastings. There are also wine pairings to enjoy – especially a chocolate and wine pairing.
At the destination, patrons can book an antipasto platter – made up of a selection of farm-fresh treats, to enjoy with a glass of wine. The platters feature a selection of Mastro Dario Italian charcuterie, Dalewood Fromage cheese and BBos local cold-smoked trout. Accompanied by fresh fruit and breads straight from the oven, this platter is perfect for a gourmet dining experience. All platter choices are included as the seasons dictate – to ensure only the freshest, tastiest experience for visitors.
While relaxing in the venue or on the veranda overlooking the open countryside and Nuwejaars River, patrons can also browse through the farm shop. Here each product is curated with care, with treats and gifts not readily available elsewhere – such as beauty products, leather products, quality crockery and exceptional honey. It’s the ideal stop for Christmas shopping.
The final step is to enjoy any trip to the Black Oystercatcher in a way true to the Human family’s traditions: By relaxing with family and friends, surrounded by nature, sipping quality wines.
