The competition, which brings together experts from across the international wine sector, saw nearly 7,500 wines from 42 countries blind-tasted by a panel of carefully selected judges. Only 30% of the wines presented were awarded medals. South African wines continue to improve in quality year-on-year, with a significant increase in Grand Gold Medals (6) and Gold Medals (35) awarded to the country’s producers. Spier’s performance was particularly notable, securing 7 of the 35 Gold Medals awarded to South African wines, building on their success from last year when they received 5 Gold Medals. This result highlights the farm’s consistent excellence and underscores South Africa’s growing prominence in the global wine industry.
Cape Coast Goodness
Spier’s 21 Gables Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 clinched the coveted Grand Gold Medal, marking the third consecutive year this wine has received top honours at the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles. This impressive streak began in 2022 when the 2018 vintage secured Grand Gold, followed by a Gold Medal for the 2019 vintage in 2023. Sourced from the Helderberg area, these Cabernet Sauvignon grapes benefit from both the region’s ideal growing conditions and the subtle coastal influence. This combination results in wines of exceptional quality and character, further cementing Stellenbosch’s reputation as a world-class Cabernet Sauvignon producer.
In addition, the Seaward range, influenced by cool coastal breezes, performed exceptionally well, with three Gold Medals awarded to the Seaward Chenin Blanc 2023, Chardonnay 2023, and Cabernet Sauvignon 2022.
Johan Jordaan, Cellar Master at Spier, expressed his excitement about the results:
“We’re thrilled to see our Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon continuing to impress on the world stage. But what’s particularly heartening is the success of our Seaward range. The coastal influence clearly brings something special to these wines, offering fantastic quality and value. This is definitely a range to watch.”
From the top-shelf 21 Gables range to the wonderful Seaward selection, Spier continues to deliver wines that showcase the best of Stellenbosch and South Africa’s coastal regions.
