Nederburg’s The Winemasters Shiraz 2022, winner of no less than three trophies at the 2024 Trophy Wine Show sponsored by Investec, recently claimed its place in the top 12 of this year’s Shiraz SA Challenge, convened by a panel of local and international judges.
Zinaschke Steyn, head of the Paarl winery’s red wine team, says: “This wine is impressing some expert palates out there. It’s getting noticed. We’re so appreciative of the recognition – it’s incredibly motivating for our hard-working team in the cellar.
“But the fact is, it all starts in the soil, in the vineyards, and for that I have to give credit to our viticulturist, Isabel Teubes. She does such an excellent job in managing our own vines here at Nederburg in Paarl, as well as those of our partner growers.
“For example, the fruit used to make our winning Shiraz comes from four main areas: Stellenbosch, Philadelphia, Paarl and Wellington. Our well-managed network of grape farmers means we have the ability to source the very best fruit for our wines, each contributing unique aspects to the final wine.
“It’s exciting to be able to work with so many building blocks, it gives us options and the freedom to experiment. Balance is always the goal, though. Our wines are fruit-driven, but not overly so, with the backbone to provide solid structure.”
Seductive in its charms, Nederburg The Winemasters Shiraz 2022 is bright with black berry fruit, pepper and spice, as well as some delicate floral notes and a firm but supple tannin structure, supported by careful oaking. “It’s generous and powerful but also contained and elegant and ends in a long finish. We believe it has all the ingredients for long-term maturation but of course it can be enjoyed now,” adds Zinasckhe. The wine is available to purchase in-store or online at https://store.nederburg.com/ at R115 a 750ml bottle.
