Bonnievale Wines has crowned a record, award-winning year with fresh accolades in recent days from two leading championships, namely the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge and Platter’s South African wine guide.
At the former, Golds were awarded to the Bonnievale Limited Release Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 and The River Collection Sauvignon Blanc 2022. The same vintage Cabernet Sauvignon received four stars from the Platter’s South African wine guide, which also awarded four stars to the Bonnievale Limited Release Chardonnay 2021.
The accolades follow on the tail of the 2022 vintage Sauvignon Blanc being recognised as one of the year’s best at the FNB Sauvignon Blanc Top 10 competition. In turn, the Gilbert & Gaillard panel highlighted the wine as being rich, full and elegant.
The Cabernet Sauvignon, it said, has a “matured nose” while the palate is rich, smooth, integrated, elegant and layered.
Gilbert & Gaillard is the publisher of an online guide to wine in France and 22 other countries, which makes it an important benchmark for wineries. France is also one of the world’s oldest and acclaimed wine producers.
On the local front, Platter’s is South Africa’s oldest wine guide with one of the most highly regarded tasting panels.
Its experts described the four-star Limited Release Cabernet Sauvignon as showing “sweet maraschino dusted with graphite and leafy notes”. A “toasty background” it said, pointed to the 18 months the wine had spent in 90% new oak. It concluded the description by saying the wine had “succulent tannins” with “satisfying dryness and persistence”.
Where the four-star Limited Release Chardonnay is concerned, the panel said the wine unfurled notes of ripe orange and “tangerine richness neatly trimmed by steely acid and deft oaking”. The overall impression was a wine “nicely dry”.
