Are you looking for a vibrant place to enjoy fine wine with a great meal? Well, look no further, Bitou Vineyards restaurant, located in Keurbooms, offers a range of Sauvignon Blanc wines. Formerly Bitou House Polo, the venue hosted top-level polo games and international players.
However, in 2008 it was converted into a vineyard with the first Sauvignon Blanc harvested in 2012 and sold in bulk. “The property was put on the open sale market, which led to the vines being neglected for two years,” says Berley Jood, manager of Bitou Vineyards. He explains that Ron Leacy purchased the property in 2014 with the idea of establishing a wider variety of cultivars to offer more wines through their cellar and restaurant.
When visiting, the wine I enjoyed the most was the Sassy 2020 Sauvignon Blanc. This wine is named after a horse that one of the managers rescued and rehabilitated to be able to participate in international races again. Sassy, however, has since passed away and the wine was named as a tribute to the resilient horse. In my opinion, this wine is one of the best wines I have ever tasted. It is mature in taste and is smooth, just how I like my wine!
Beyond their fine wines, Bitou Vineyards’ restaurant is equipped with a great chef, Westler Collin. His attention to detail shows in his dishes and in the way the food is presented. Chef Collin has not been with the restaurant for long but has already left his mark, explaining: “When I came to the restaurant, I wanted to add my personal touch to everything that was on the menu. I wanted the food to speak to my style of cooking. I have had nothing but great reviews from customers about my dishes.” And, as someone who tasted his food I must say: the food was delicious and you could tell that it was cooked from the heart.
Chef Westler Collin elaborates on his philosophy of how he would like to bring a vibrant atmosphere to the venue that will also “cool” for young people. This comes as no surprise as the restaurant’s management and employees come off as young, energetic and very friendly. Their customer service is amazing and I look forward to their future plans of opening a boutique hotel, hosting picnics and weddings, with their first wedding planned for this September.
Bitou Vineyards restaurant might just be one of the busiest spots in Plettenberg Bay, with their beautiful vineyard views, delicious meals and wonderfully warm staff. Never been there before? Well, you definitely need to visit this wonderful vineyard. They operate daily from 11h00 till 18h00.
I look forward to my next visit to the vineyard; it is definitely on my bucket list for this summer!
