The Sunshine Coast is unique in its geographical situation and is biodiversity rich, with five of the seven biomes found in South Africa meeting here. Set midway between East London and Port Elizabeth and midway between Cape Town and Durban, the unspoilt beaches and quaint seaside villages makes a popular destination.
It is home to 10 rivers, long stretches of pristine beaches (4 Blue Flag beaches), a Blue Flag Marina, picturesque small boat harbour, and several malaria-free game reserves (nearly all hosting the Big 5).
Exciting water sport opportunities, excellent birding (over 400 species) world-class arts and crafts and a rich cultural history are just some of the attractions. There is something for everybody, whether it is activity or relaxation you seek. The Sunshine Coast is especially proud of the pro-active marine, estuary and nature conservation emphasis in the area.
Port Alfred – unique and picturesque
The coastal towns along the Sunshine Coast are unique and picturesque. Port Alfred, the heart of the Sunshine Coast, is the largest town with a rich history and beautifully preserved buildings dating back to the 1820s. The town has excellent restaurants and pubs and offers a variety of accommodation options for visitors – from camping through to 5-Star hotels and game reserves.
The town’s picturesque small boat harbour offers one of the most popular activities – a cruise up the beautiful Kowie River, which runs through the centre of the town. An excellent adventure centre and a variety of sporting facilities, including the Royal Port Alfred Golf Club, make this town a destination of choice. Here you can also learn to surf, to dive or complete your skippers course. An exciting deep-sea fishing trip is an experience you will never forget.
Port Alfred is also home to Stenden SA, a Dutch Hospitality University as well as the famed 43 Air School, and internationally acclaimed pilot training facility.
Bathurst – quaint and arty
Nearby, Bathurst is an eclectic mix of old and new, and home to the Big Pineapple, a must see. The little village is populated with artists and academics and has interesting and quaint stores and studios. The village has a rich history and beautifully preserved buildings and churches dating back to 1821. One of the most famous landmarks is the Pig and Whistle Hotel. Scenic hiking trails can be explored from the famous Horseshoe Bend.
Kenton-on-Sea – between two rivers
Kenton-on-Sea to the west of Port Alfred is a picturesque holiday town set between two iconic rivers, the Kariega and Bushmans Rivers. The town centre is an attractive mix of artisan restaurants, bakery and coffee shops and art galleries. Big 5 game reserves are located close to the village, and offer excellent wildlife experiences. A walk from nearby Boknes to the famed Dias Cross is a must do.
Alexandria – shifting dune fields
Alexandria, is a farming town, and borders on the Addo Elephant National Park. The famous shifting dune fields in Alexandria and natural forests offer excellent hiking opportunities. Situated close to Alexandria is Cannon Rock and Boknes, two holiday towns with exquisite beaches.

To the East of Port Alfred, Kleinemonde, Kap River and Fish River all offer beautiful and unspoilt beaches. Kleinemonde is set between two rivers and has shallow lagoons ideal for young children to play in. The Kap River is a Nature Reserve Conservancy Area stocked with game such as Giraffe, Blesbuck, Zebra and the like. It is also a hiking paradise.
