Barefoot in the sand up north

by Supplied Content

Looking to lose the crowds on the southern beaches this summer? Head north!

South Africa’s least crowded coastline hides some of its most hauntingly beautiful beaches. The Northern Cape’s Atlantic edge offers solitude, wind-sculpted dunes, and raw scenery that feels worlds away from the bustle of the south. What you will find are vast horizons, quiet surf, and that sense of stillness you can’t buy.

1. McDOUGALL’S BAY

Just south of Port Nolloth in the Northern Cape, McDougall’s Bay is a pocket of calm and open space. It’s known locally for camping, boating, fishing and crayfishing. Families love its rock pools and holiday homes that back right onto the sand.

2. PORT NOLLOTH BEACH

The historic fishing town of Port Nolloth has a beach that mirrors its easy pace. Long, flat sands,
a photogenic lighthouse and plenty of rock pools make this the go-to family spot on the coast.

3. KLEINZEE BEACH

About 72 kilometres from Port Nolloth, Kleinzee Beach lies at the mouth of the Buffels River. Once a diamond-mining town, Kleinzee is now open to travellers seeking quiet, empty horizons. Bring a windbreaker, a picnic, and no agenda. There are potentially strong currents here, so swimming is not encouraged. However, the beach has become popular for the many excellent restaurants nearby.

4. HONDEKLIP BAY BEACH

A former harbour for copper exports, today Hondeklip Bay is a coastal village with long beaches and a laid-back pace. It’s part of the Namaqua coastal route, where you can mix beach walks with spring wildflower viewing and rockpool exploring.

5. ALEXANDER BAY BEACH

At the mouth of the Orange River lies Alexander Bay, South Africa’s northernmost coastal town. This remote beach marks where the Atlantic meets Namibia, and it’s as wild as it gets. Keep an eye out for seabirds and riverine wildlife.

THE WILD TRUTH

The Northern Cape coast isn’t about cocktails or beach clubs. It’s about wind, space and the unfiltered power of the Atlantic. Visit between September and April for milder weather, and bring everything you need; water, shade, snacks and a sense of wonder.
