The Piekenierskloof Mountain Resort 4-star rating could easily pass as 5 stars. It is nestled in the heart of the Cederberg mountains, off the N7, and just 170km from Cape Town.
Here you can take leisurely walks, bird watch, practice some archery, relax in a warm pool or dive into a glistening and clear pool all in one place. My recent stay at this fascinating retreat was a symphony of peacefulness and adventure.
The surrounding ancient peaks have borne witness to the ebb and flow of human endeavour, from the nomadic Khoisan peoples who roamed these lands to the intrepid settlers and explorers who followed in their footsteps. The mountains are steeped in stories of resilience, adventure, and the enduring spirit of exploration.
Did you know? In the old days, wagons used to traverse the tracks over the mountain. However, the crossing was so difficult that wagons had to be dismantled and carried over the steep bits to the other side!
Variety of accommodation options
The resort offers a variety of accommodation options, from cozy chalets to spacious villas, all thoughtfully designed to blend in with the natural beauty that surrounds us. Each unit is equipped with modern amenities to ensure a comfortable stay for guests.
I was fortunate enough to stay in one of the self-catering chalets, situated close enough to the hotel to walk but far away enough for peace and tranquillity. The views down the valley are spectacular. Talk about heaven on earth…
The rustic interior, decorated with wooden furnishings and a fireplace, with warmth and comfort, invited me to savour the simple joys of mountain living.
So much to do
The resort has a beautiful wellness centre that offers face and body spa treatments, an ideal way to unwind and enjoy a bit of pampering. Unfortunately, I was not able to enjoy a session due to time constraints but there is always next time!
While at the resort you can get competitive at table tennis, snooker, mini golf, archery, or outdoor chess or let the kids jump on the trampoline in the children’s play area, whilst you sip on a cocktail or mocktail basking in the sun.
Alternatively, opt for a walk in the gardens filled with indigenous fynbos and test your observation skills at bird spotting and identification. There is also the option to picnic under towering trees, letting each moment offer an opportunity to rejuvenate body, mind, and soul.
The resort is known for a phenomenal zipline experience enjoyed by adventure junkies. Had the ziplining not been out of order due to recent flooding in the Citrusdal area, I would have put my daredevil hat on and ziplined away… Although I opted not to venture onto the hiking trails, there was no shortage of ways to pass time. It does not matter in which season you visit the resort as it has an indoor heated pool, as well as an outdoor swimming pool.
Hospitality in its purest form
Throughout my stay, the staff at the resort symbolised hospitality in its purest form. From the heartfelt welcome upon arrival to the attentive service at mealtimes, their genuine care and attention made me feel like an honoured guest in their mountain sanctuary.
There is so much more I can say but make the time to book a holiday and you will be surprised. It’s a fantastic place and a great wedding venue too. It has the most beautiful view, delicious food, professional service, and luxurious rooms, everything one needs to enjoy a perfect holiday.
I will remember my time at the Piekenierskloof Mountain Resort as a journey of discovery and renewal. Surrounded by the breathtaking beauty and storied history of the Cederberg Mountains, I found solace, adventure, and a deep appreciation for the wonders of the natural world.
