Just two hours from Cape Town lies Melozhori Private Game Reserve – a place of quiet splendour, rolling hills, and endless skies.

Tucked away from the bustle of everyday life, this haven offers families and friends the perfect space to reconnect, not only with each other but also with the restorative power of nature.

We arrived on a crisp Sunday afternoon – the ideal way to begin the week. From the moment we passed through the gates, there was a tangible sense of groundedness and privacy. Our home for the stay was a charming cottage perched high on a hill, overlooking sweeping plains and the undulating beauty of the reserve.

Arrival touches that make you exhale

Before we’d even unpacked, the wood-fired hot tub was already warming, ready to welcome us after the drive. It’s these pre-emptive touches at Melozhori – anticipating guests’ needs before they ask – that remove all the usual stresses from a getaway.

Waiting for us was a beautifully prepared snack platter, inviting us to settle in immediately. With smoky aromas from the hot tub fire curling through the air, we felt the pace of life slow instantly. That evening, the scent of wood smoke lingered from not only the hot tub but also the pizza oven and the indoor fire – an atmosphere that wrapped us in comfort.

Pizza-making as a family affair

One of the highlights of Melozhori is the pizza oven at each accommodation. Everything we needed for a feast was provided – fresh bases, generous toppings, and a sense of culinary adventure. My little one and my husband dove into the experience, laughing as we crafted our creations together.

Morning game drives and small wonders

The next morning, excitement bubbled as we climbed aboard the game vehicle. Game drives at Melozhori are more than wildlife spotting; they’re a chance to truly learn. Our ranger stopped often, explaining animal behaviour and pointing out fascinating details in the landscape.

One memorable moment was when our little one peppered the ranger with questions about termite hills. Patiently, he took us out to investigate up close, describing how anteaters source their meals. Later, with hot chocolate and still-warm biscuits in hand, we felt the joy of slow, unhurried exploration.

Slow afternoons and hammock naps

Back at the cottage, the hammocks called to us – each one a cosy cocoon complete with pillows and blankets. We spent hours here, occasionally dozing off to the sound of wind through the trees, before another round in the hot tub.

A surprise visit from a ranger brought another special moment – a chance for our little one to feed a lamb. The delight on their face is something we’ll never forget.

Sundowners to remember

That evening, we set out determined to spot giraffes – and we were rewarded. Watching them graze in the fading light felt timeless. Then, as if the day couldn’t get better, we were led to Rangers Rest, where a lantern-lit path opened onto a bonfire circle with chairs, blankets, and a decadent sundowner spread.

As the winter sunset painted the sky, we sank into our seats, drinks in hand, reluctant to leave this perfect moment. Conversations stretched into twilight, the kind you only have when you’re deeply relaxed and far from distractions.

Why Melozhori stands apart

With no predators on the reserve, guests are free to explore on foot or by bicycle. Every experience feels personalised, every meal crafted with care, and every interaction infused with warmth. It’s a rare combination of freedom and attentive hospitality – the kind that makes you feel truly seen and completely spoilt.
