Blaauwklippen – Picking up the pieces

by Tia

In the wake of the devastating fire that engulfed Blaauwklippen’s iconic Jonkershuis, Manor House, and Cathedral on Sunday morning, the estate will be turning its focus to rebuilding its historic buildings, even as it’s back to work for its staff and team.

The fire took just minutes to spread across the estate, necessitating swift action from firefighters and rescue teams. Unfortunately, the incident represented only one of five fires that demanded urgent intervention in the area, and the teams were forced to prioritise in managing the blaze, especially to ensure that no lives were lost.

Despite the destruction of its 300-year-old heritage buildings, Blaauwkippen is grateful to report that there were no serious injuries. Sunday was predominately spent managing the fire in the mill house and medallion, while battling the impact of fierce gale force winds. Monday morning was then dedicated to connecting and liaising with guests and staff, and assessing the extent of the damage.

Although the buildings have been destroyed, the Grande Dame of Blaauwklippen will rise again, more beautiful than ever. For now, that section of the estate will be closed to the public, but Blaauwklippen’s management are pleased to announce that the Tasting House, De Blaauwe Kitchen, market, bike park, and all other facilities will reopen to the public from today, Wednesday, 10 April.

Once again, Blaauwklippen would like to express its sincere thanks and appreciation to the firefighters for their bravery and many hours of hard work, its staff and guests for their understanding and support, as well as its many well-wishers for their kind thoughts and messages.

Its management team have expressed that they are truly heart warmed to be part of such an amazing and generous community, and that they look forward to welcoming visitors back to the estate – as well as to the future reopening of its cherished and iconic buildings.
