New Arrival at Mont Eco Game Reserve brings the reserve into a new chapter of conservation

by Media Xpose

At Mont Eco Game Reserve, our vision has always been to restore the rich biodiversity that once thrived in this landscape, encompassing the lush plant life and the diverse wildlife that roamed freely. Every species we reintroduce is a step closer to this dream, enhancing the natural balance of our environment and building a sustainable haven for animals. In October we were thrilled to announce a monumental addition to our wildlife family that brings us even closer to this goal: a mother hippo and her calf.

A Momentous Arrival

In the early hours of October 11, 2024, this mother-calf duo arrived at Mont Eco, marking a significant chapter in our conservation journey. The scene was nothing short of inspiring—as the mother and calf walked onto the reserve grounds with an instinctive sense of belonging. They calmly explored their new environment, with the mother confidently guiding her young calf. Their arrival was a powerful symbol of the peaceful, protected environment Mont Eco strives to create for all its residents.

Watching the mother and calf’s bond unfold has been a heartwarming experience for our entire team. Their quiet demeanour and sense of security showcase the deep, unspoken connection between mother and calf as they navigate their new home together.

A Keystone Species with a Vital Role

Hippos are often referred to as a keystone species because of their crucial role in maintaining the balance of their ecosystems. Though they may appear gentle, hippos are immensely powerful and territorial, traits that not only help them protect their young but also sustain their habitat’s natural balance. Unlike many large herbivores, hippos spend most of their time submerged in water, which regulates their body temperature and protects their sensitive skin from the sun. As night grazers, they travel far in search of grasslands, which make up an essential part of their diet and contribute to the broader ecosystem.

Bringing these hippos into Mont Eco is about more than expanding our wildlife—it’s a way to support the overall health of the Karoo landscape. As our new residents make themselves at home, we look forward to their positive impact on the reserve’s biodiversity.

Making Mont Eco their home

Our new hippo residents have quickly settled into life at Mont Eco, delighting both our team and lucky guests with their occasional appearances. Recently, they’ve been spotted in a serene pool along a nearby river, which seems to have become their favourite retreat. With ample shade and grazing close at hand, it’s the perfect spot for this mother and calf to relax and thrive. The mother’s remarkable ability to blend into her surroundings, sometimes appearing like just another rock in the river, makes each sighting an extraordinary moment. These glimpses into their tranquil routine offer a rare and unforgettable experience, underscoring the harmonious bond they’ve formed with their new home.

Welcoming Guests to Witness Conservation in Action

For our guests, this mother-calf pair is a unique and memorable sight, adding an element of surprise to the Karoo’s arid landscape. Observing a mother hippo protectively guiding her calf through waterholes and open spaces is a rare treat and an incredible opportunity for guests to witness the nurturing side of one of Africa’s most formidable animals. For many, seeing hippos in such an environment will be a highlight of their Mont Eco experience, an experience that also brings them closer to the heart of conservation.

Whether you’re visiting for a day drive or an extended stay, our new hippo family offers an unforgettable encounter with wildlife. These remarkable animals embody the natural beauty and purpose that Mont Eco stands for, and we are proud to give them a safe, protected space to thrive.

A New Chapter in Conservation

With every species we introduce, Mont Eco Game Reserve deepens its commitment to restoring and preserving the wildlife that once flourished here. The addition of this hippo mother and calf isn’t just a new attraction; it’s a meaningful stride forward in our conservation mission, one that strengthens our ecosystem and enriches the safari experience for our guests.

Welcome home, mom and calf! Your presence here symbolizes hope for the future and the importance of creating a space where wildlife can live in harmony. We invite all who are passionate about conservation to visit Mont Eco and witness firsthand this exciting new chapter as we continue our journey to restore the natural balance of this beautiful land.
