Father’s Day is just around the corner, and it’s time to celebrate the special bond we share with our dads. If you’re looking for the perfect gift that goes beyond the traditional tie or pairof socks, why not plan a memorable holiday together? Flight Centre recently conducted a survey to uncover South African dads’ favourite holiday activities and dream destinations.
The survey revealed that for 81% of dads, quality time with the family is an essential element of a holiday, while 19% enjoy adding friends to the mix.
“We were heartened to discover the preference of dads to spend quality time with their families during their holidays. It’s wonderful to see that they value the opportunity to create lasting memories with their loved ones through outdoor activities and shared adventures,” says Antoinette Turner, GM Flight Centre South Africa.
The survey revealed an interesting finding about what kind of holiday would make Dad really happy. “Most of the dads polled preferred a sunny summer beach holiday, but a good number genuinely wanted a cosy winter getaway in the countryside. This unexpected difference shows how diverse and interesting our dads’ travel preferences can be. It’s a gentle reminder that our dads, just like the places they dream of visiting, are full of surprises and unique tastes,” says Turner.
If you’re looking for a perfect holiday for the father figure in your life, Turner suggests the following, as inspired by the survey.
Add a good dose of adventure to the travel mix
Based on the Flight Centre survey, it was found that 50% of fathers selected camping as their preferred holiday activity, with 19% favouring hiking. It’s not surprising considering the benefits these activities offer. From enjoying roasted marshmallows over a crackling campfire or conquering challenging trails, these activities provide a sense of freedom, exploration, and excitement and present an ideal opportunity for fathers to bond with their families, strengthen relationships, and cultivate a love for the great outdoors.
Consider his hobbies
When planning a Father’s Day getaway, don’t forget to tap into your dad’s passions and hobbies! According to the Flight Centre survey, fathers’ top choices for holiday adventures include golfing (19%) and fishing (13%). If your dad is a golf enthusiast, South Africa is the place to be. You’ll find no shortage of options to book a tee time that will make his day.
“The Garden Route offers an excellent combination of family-friendly experiences and excellent golfing. With over 25 golf courses, this 250-kilometre stretch along the legendary South African coastline has been a long-standing attraction for golf enthusiasts and pros from around the world. It’s the perfect destination to enjoy some quality family time and tee off in style,” says Turner. Cape Town came in as the number five choice for Dad’s travel plans, so she recommends extending a Garden Route trip to the Mother City.
And for the dads who love to cast a line, Dullstroom in South Africa is like a fishing paradise. This picturesque town offers beautiful lakes and rivers brimming with trout, providing the perfect backdrop for your dad to reel in his catch of the day.
Follow the sun
The survey revealed that 63% of South African dads are highly attracted to spending their summer holidays on the beach. Moreover, the survey found that the Philippines ranked as the second most popular destination among fathers – putting it on the map as a go-to destination for South African families seeking the sun. The ever-popular Mauritius and Zanzibar arecloser to home, and as idyllic tropical paradises also offer pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and a range of water activities.
“Mauritius and Zanzibar are increasingly popular for South Africans because they have no visa requirements. And for those who have visited Mauritius before, Zanzibar offers a more authentic Africa experience, untouched diving spots and a slower pace,” says Turner.
Consider the golfing meccas
“We were amazed to find that New Zealand and Scotland were among the top six destinations preferred by dads for travel. However, it becomes clearer when you take into account their desire to play golf while on holiday,” says Turner.
New Zealand and Scotland are exceptional destinations for golf-loving dads. In New Zealand(which ranked number four on top destinations for dads), the lush landscapes and diverse terrain create a stunning backdrop for golf enthusiasts, with renowned courses like Cape Kidnappers and Kauri Cliffs. Scotland, the birthplace of golf, offers legendary courses like St. Andrews and Muirfield, set against dramatic coastal landscapes.
Head north into southern Africa
Namibia was number one on the list of places dads would love to visit, and Botswana came in at number three. Ichingo Chobe River Lodge by Mantis ticks all the boxes for dads who love fishing. Part of the Zambezi Queen Collection, this lodge is renowned for its tiger fishing excursions. Located on the Namibian side of the Chobe River, where it’s quieter, IchingoChobe River Lodge is ideal for fishermen, groups, families or couples. You can enjoy catch-and-release fishing for the mighty Tiger fish and one of the many Bream species, African Pike, Tilapia, Catfish or upper Zambezi Yellowfish along the Chobe River, Kasai Channel or Zambezi River. Botswana lies on the other side of the river – so it’s easy to add a few days to a trip to explore it.
Cape Town: The ultimate all-round experience
It’s not surprising Cape Town came up as number five on the travel wishlist for dads. It has itall: beautiful hikes, top-notch golf courses and delectable food and wine. It’s all right on your doorstep! The Lion’s Head hike is a local winner, a fantastic city adventure with well-marked trails and incredible panoramic views. This hike is a hit on full moon nights (bring your headlamp!) and at sunrise. Plus, just under an hour away, you’ll find the amazing ErinvaleGolf Course, a golfer’s paradise.
What else do we know Dad loves? Sports. “You could also make this Father’s Day a grand slam by surprising the special dad in your life with the ultimate sports travel adventure. Whether it’s catching the action of Formula 1 live or cheering on his favourite rugby team in France later this year, a Flight Centre gift card will help get him there,” says Turner.
