Tokara celebrates 25 golden years with new luxurious Straw Wine

by Tia

Tokara, the family-owned Stellenbosch wine and olive estate, has launched a sumptuous Reserve Collection Straw Wine in celebration of its 25th anniversary.

Adding his Midas touch to a small cluster of Chenin blanc grapes from a single vineyard on the midslope of the Simonsberg, winemaker Stuart Botha has created a hedonistic, beautifully tempered golden nectar to delight the senses.

The Tokara Reserve Collection Chenin Blanc Straw Wine 2023 is produced in the traditional method dating back to the ancient Greeks by laying out the fresh, ripe grapes on straw mats, allowing them to desiccate in the open air. During the drying period of three to five weeks, the concentrated flavours and sweetness balance harmoniously with the natural acidity of the grapes.

“The team loved every intricate step of making the wine and the outcome has exceeded all our expectations. Every bottle is filled with golden, unctuous nectar, with orange notes on the nose and delicious honey and marmalade on the palate. The wine flows through the palate seamlessly with remarkable freshness,” explains Stuart who recommends enjoying it with duck liver pâté on melba toast or to finish off a meal with a decadent crème brûlée.

Available exclusively at the Tokara tasting room, this delectable sweet wine is an exercise in concentration and rounds off a trio of wine styles made from the same Chenin blanc block on the farm.

Family values and a responsible, sustainable footprint both in terms of the environment and its people, many of whom have been with Tokara from the onset, have shaped the farm’s world-class wines with their distinct South African identity. As the new jewel in the Tokara crown, the Straw Wine upholds all these enduring values instilled by GT and Anne-Marie Ferreira over the past 25 years.
