Kultura Wine Festival brings together the best in local wines

by Richard van Staden

The first-ever Kultura Festival, which takes place from 20 to 27 June this year at Curro Durbanville High School, is a celebration of Afrikaans, culture, camaraderie and of course, the fruit-of-the-vine that surrounds the northern suburbs from all sides.

Because of the scale and appeal of this offering, it even has its own festive name – the Kultura Wine Festival!

Guests attending productions during the weekend of 20 to 22 June, will have the opportunity to taste the best wines from the Durbanville Wine Valley as well as the Van Loveren family vineyards – that’s a total of 12 wine farms’ outstanding wines (and some fine biltong and olives from Cape Deli to snack on in-between!)

The eight participating farms in the Durbanville Wine Valley are Nitida, Maastricht, Canto, D’Aria, Meerendal, Klein Roosboom, Diemersdal and Groot Phesantekraal. What the wine farms have in common are slopes between 250 and 400 meters above sea level, sunny summers and a cool Atlantic Sea breeze. Add to this group of passionate, characterful winemakers and you are in for a sensory feast.

The region is of course best known for its Sauvignon Blanc, and tasters will be able to pick and choose from a wide range. But there is also plenty for sparkling wine lovers, and several bold reds perfect for winter – including a top-awarded wine or two.

From the stable of the Van Loveren family vineyards, festivalgoers will be spoiled with a large selection of wines that offer a lovely overview of their portfolio which consists of Van Loveren, Zandvliet, Survivor Wines and Neil Ellis.

The Robertson Valley’s terroir is rich in limestone that produces good Chardonnays, so Chardonnay fans can expect something special. Between Van Loveren from the Robertson Valley, Zandvliet which is in Ashton, Survivor Wines which makes wines from five terroirs (Swartland, Tradouw, Stellenbosch, Elgin and Darling), and Neil Ellis who uses grapes from Piekenierskloof and Jonkershoek Valley, among others, the offerings and cultivars are abundant.

Don’t miss out, it’s going to be a truly unique wine experience.
