Make magical memories in George

by Media Xpose

Break away from the hustle and bustle of the big city!

Surprise your family (or partner) by whisking them away for a couple of days to the town of George in the Garden Route. There is no better place to show them just how much you love and appreciate them. Here is why:

Outdoorsy types won’t know where to begin when it comes to choosing alfresco action. A multitude of hiking, trail running and mountain biking routes link gorgeous places and spaces and will ensure a spike in adrenaline levels. Rugged mountain slopes and steep cliff sides can be explored from an abseiling point of view, and if paragliding dreams are on your bucket list, this is the place to come tick it off. There are rivers to be paddled, decent waves to be surfed, loads of fishing opportunities and twitchers will enjoy the diverse and striking bird life.

Golfers can swing their clubs on one of the many great golf courses in and around George. Whether it’s at Oubaai’s clifftop setting with its stunning ocean views, navigating South Africa’s number one golf course, the Links, at the famed Fancourt Estate, or stepping back in time at the historical parkland George Golf Club, golfers will find themselves in putters’ nirvana.

If you enjoy photography, arts and history, you will truly be in your element. Surrounded by intense natural beauty, you can point your lens virtually anywhere to capture award-winning pics. Oceanic sunsets, dramatic mountain scapes, close-ups of unique fynbos species, action shots, poignant rural scenes; you name the theme and it’s readily available. There are art galleries to explore. The two museums in town put things beautifully in perspective and are nostalgic, yet thrilling passageways to bygone times, featuring vintage motors, trains, ox wagons that traversed the passes before modern transport and more.

What about food and drink? Not to worry, the culinary arts are well represented with a vibrant restaurant scene. From fine-dining to hamburgers, seafood to steaks and everything in between – the full spectrum is covered. The four trending biggies in the world of beverages are also in no short supply. Excellent wine, gin and craft beers can be sampled at the Houtbosch tasting rooms at Redberry Farm. All sorts of fruity-flavoured gins are conjured up at 10 Oxes Craft Distillery in the Waboomskraal Valley just outside George. Don’t forget about the king of non-alcoholic beverages, namely premium coffee. There are plenty of places to get a caffeine-fix, and various eateries roast their own beans for a truly kingly coffee experience. The popular singer, Elvis Blue, has a brightly coloured padstal opposite the airport where his own unique brew, in addition to other goodies, is for sale.

All the above treasures are easily accessible via road and air linkages. The George Airport has been awarded South African Airport of the Year several times and is a first-class facility. Otherwise, hit the road Jack and come visit via the N2 highway, connecting George with main cities such as Cape Town and Gqeberha.

And if all that is not enough enticement to holiday for a few days in paradise, keep in mind that George lies within easy reach of other great Garden Route attractions for awesome day trips. Thus, “pack” your family or partner and come make magical memories.
