Emirates, the world’s largest international airline, has unveiled its refurbished Boeing 777 aircraft in South Africa, marking the African debut of its highly acclaimed Premium Economy product. The showcase, hosted in Cape Town and Johannesburg, highlighted the airline’s next-generation cabin design and reinforced its three-decade commitment to the country.
Key industry figures including Wrenelle Stander, CEO of Wesgro, and Poppy Khoza, Director General of the South African Civil Aviation Authority, joined Emirates executives to celebrate the milestone.
Elevating the Passenger Experience
“Over the years, we have built strong relationships with our customers and are proud to have a very high percentage of repeat passengers,” said Afzal Parambil, Regional Manager for Southern Africa. “The deployment of our refurbished Boeing 777, our first in Africa, will further elevate the experience for these passengers, with the introduction of Premium Economy and our new Business Class experience.”
The upgraded four-class aircraft features:
- Economy Class: Ocean-blue interiors, high ceilings, and spacious seating.
- Premium Economy: South Africa’s first, offering reclining leather seats, leg rests, 13.3-inch entertainment screens, in-seat charging, and sparkling wine service with Chandon Vintage Brut 2017.
- Business Class: Reconfigured 1-2-1 layout with champagne leather finishes and direct aisle access.
- First Class Suites: Continuing Emirates’ signature “hotel room in the sky” luxury.
Inside Emirates’ $5 Billion Retrofit Programme
The refurbishment is part of Emirates’ USD $5 billion retrofit programme, launched in 2022. Conducted entirely in-house by Emirates Engineering, the project spans 219 aircraft, with 67 already completed. Once finalised, it will deliver:
- Over 8,500 Premium Economy seats
- More than 2,000 First-Class suites
- Upgraded cabins across all travel classes
This significant investment underscores the airline’s determination to offer a seamless blend of luxury, comfort, and innovation while maintaining its strong presence in the South African market.
A Commitment to South Africa
As Emirates celebrates 30 years of service in South Africa, the refurbished Boeing 777 signals a bold step forward in enhancing the travel experience for local passengers. From business travellers to long-haul leisure flyers, the debut of Premium Economy bridges the gap between accessibility and luxury—a first for African skies.
