The Living Journey Collection marks a decade of South African hospitality with the acquisition of Majeka House, a landmark boutique hotel in the Stellenbosch Winelands.
This milestone expands the group to eight small luxury properties, all within a two-hour drive of Cape Town. The portfolio is known for heartfelt service, thoughtful design, and a strong sense of place. Founded by international hoteliers Friedrich and Lorraine Schaefer, the collection reflects their belief in hospitality rooted in care, culture, and meaningful connection.
A decade of conscious, people-centred hospitality
The Schaefers met in New York in the late 1980s, working at respected luxury hotels including The Westbury and Plaza Athénée. Their global experience inspired a return to the true heart of hospitality. The Living Journey Collection champions personal service, authentic warmth and the freedom to create genuine memories without the rigidity of traditional hotel formality.
The group employs approximately 170 staff, one-third of whom have been promoted from within. The commitment to talent development and long-term careers forms a cornerstone of the brand.
A focus on sustainability runs through each hotel, from the use of local design talent and handcrafted décor to thoughtful environmental practices. Each property aims to uplift local communities and celebrate its regional character.
A growing collection of boutique experiences
“We want guests to leave feeling joyful, cared for and enriched. Small touches matter. Our teams are encouraged to share their passion with every guest,” says Friedrich Schaefer, co-owner of The Living Journey Collection.
The eight properties each offer a unique experience, but all deliver the group’s signature hospitality ethos: calm environments, attentive service, and refined yet relaxed luxury.
