Ceres Rail has announced the launch of The Mossel Bay Explorer, a six-day scenic rail journey travelling from Cape Town to Mossel Bay and back.
Scheduled for 7 to 12 May 2026, the journey focuses on slow travel, where the experience of the route is as important as the destination. Passengers travel through inland farming towns, mountain passes, and coastal landscapes aboard vintage rail coaches.
From Cape Town to Swellendam
The journey begins with an early morning departure from Cape Town, following the Cape main line through the Western Cape. After reaching Worcester around midday, the train diverts onto the Mossel Bay branch line.
Along the way, passengers pass through Robertson and Bonnievale, with views of the Langeberg Mountains, stretches of the Breede River, and surrounding agricultural land.
The first overnight stop is Swellendam. Guests stay at selected bed and breakfast establishments, with transfers between the station and accommodation included. Supper and breakfast are provided.
Steam traction and arrival in Mossel Bay
On day two, the train continues through Heidelberg and Riversdale. At Albertinia, a steam locomotive is attached, adding a strong heritage element to the journey.
A photo stop is scheduled at the Gouritz River bridge before the steam-hauled arrival into Mossel Bay. Passengers spend three nights in the town, staying at either the four-star Point Hotel or Protea Hotel. Friday evening supper and escorted transfers are included.
Free time and coastal rail travel
Saturday is free for independent exploration in Mossel Bay. Suggested activities include visiting the Post Office Tree Museum, relaxing on the beaches, visiting the casino, or playing golf. Breakfast and supper are included. Daytime activities and transport are at guests’ own cost.
On Sunday, the train departs late morning for a coastal run to Great Brak River. A buffet lunch is served at the station restaurant before the train returns to Mossel Bay. All transfers and meals for the day are included.
Return journey via Montagu
The return journey begins on Monday, travelling back through the Western Cape interior. Instead of returning to Swellendam, passengers overnight in Montagu, staying at selected accommodation near Ashton. Transfers, supper, and breakfast are included.
On the final day, passengers rejoin the train for the return to Cape Town. The journey includes an onboard wine tasting and finger lunch, with arrival expected in the early evening.
What to know before you book
The Mossel Bay Explorer operates with a mix of steam and Transnet diesel locomotives, with steam used where operationally possible. Coaches are vintage observation and lounge-style cars designed for sightseeing.
There is no WiFi onboard, and the train is not fully air-conditioned. May weather is expected to be mild and comfortable for travel.
