The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company kicked off the December festive season with a landmark moment, welcoming its 33 millionth visitor on Monday, 15 December.
Since operations began in 1929, millions of locals and international travellers have used the cable cars to reach the summit of one of Cape Town’s most iconic landmarks.
A surprise moment at the Lower Cable Station
The milestone visitor, Thabiso Letsoalo from Limpopo, was surprised with a curated gift hamper and special recognition at the Lower Cable Station.
He was visiting Table Mountain with his partner, Ofentse Huma, as they prepared to board the cable car. The couple is in Cape Town for their second visit, making the experience even more memorable.
“It was such a lovely experience. The shock and thrill of the surprise made it even more special,” says Letsoalo. “We are having a great time and it’s definitely one of those memories we’ll keep forever. Cape Town is just different and so beautiful compared to where we’re from, which is why we keep coming back.”
A historic achievement for Table Mountain
Managing Director Wahida Parker says the milestone reflects decades of local and global support.
“Reaching 33 million visitors since the start of operations in 1929 is incredible for TMACC,” says Parker. “Welcoming both our 32 and 33 millionth visitors in the same year is truly remarkable.”
She adds that the milestone carries added significance following recent industry recognition.
“Achieving this in the same month that our Twelve Apostles Terrace was named Africa’s Best MICE Event Venue amplifies the importance of this moment. It highlights the strength of our business events offering and reinforces how Table Mountain continues to shape both leisure and corporate tourism in Cape Town.”
More than a bucket-list attraction
According to Parker, Table Mountain plays a vital role beyond sightseeing.
“Table Mountain is not only a bucket-list experience for travellers. It is also a sought-after setting for meaningful business gatherings, corporate events and global connections. Every person who chooses to visit our mountain becomes part of our story.”
Festive season travel tips
The milestone comes during one of the busiest periods of the year for the Cableway. Parker encourages festive-season visitors to plan.
She advises guests to:
• Buy tickets online in advance to save
• Download the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway app for real-time weather, queue and operational updates
• Use the Park and Ride service, as parking is limited along Tafelberg Road
