From Maputo to Lisbon: A Journey of History, Heritage and Endurance

by Richard van Staden

This month, a fearless father-daughter team sets off on the second leg of an extraordinary overland journey that spans 33,500 km across Africa and Europe.

Ana and Carlos Oliveira, united by a shared passion for Portuguese heritage, African landscapes and epic adventure, are travelling from Maputo, Mozambique to Lisbon, Portugal.

Their mission? To retrace the paths of historic Portuguese explorers, on the ground, through modern Africa, all the way back to the heart of Iberia.

Exploring Africa on the Discoverers Route

The journey, covering 27 countries, is divided into two epic legs. The first section — the Explorers Route — began in Angola and included Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, South Africa and Mozambique.

Now begins the Discoverers Route, starting in Maputo and passing through South Africa, Eswatini, Lesotho, Namibia, Angola, DRC, Congo Brazzaville, Cameroon, Nigeria, Benin, Togo, Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Liberia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Senegal, Mauritania, Western Sahara, Morocco, Spain, and finally, Portugal.

The journey will end in Lisbon in November 2025, the historical launch point for many of Portugal’s greatest navigators.

Staying Connected in the Wild with Starlink

As Ana and Carlos traverse some of Africa’s most remote and rugged regions, connectivity is critical — not only for safety but also to share their experience with the world.

That’s where Paratus Mozambique steps in, supplying the duo with Starlink satellite internet equipment and service to stay connected in the most isolated terrains.

Paratus Mozambique Backs the Spirit of Adventure

Rui Costa, MD of Paratus Mozambique, expressed the company’s pride in supporting this one-of-a-kind expedition:

“We believe that this epic journey represents our values of spirit and adventure, and we are proud to be providing essential connectivity to these two brave pioneers. This sponsorship reflects our commitment to delivering connectivity across Africa — across borders, through rural and unchartered territories, and along every gravel road they will encounter.”
