Taj Hotels Plans Major Expansion in Sub-Saharan Africa

by Kim Kay

Taj Hotels, part of Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL), is embarking on an expansion strategy to offer tourists a consummate travel experience in sub-Saharan Africa.

Aligned with IHCL’s 2030 ambitions

This strategy aligns with IHCL’s growth plans and the objective of offering an outstanding tourism experience at 700 hotels by 2030. “Here in sub-Saharan Africa, Taj Hotels has kept pace with the group’s growth through its own noteworthy acquisitions,” says Mark Wernich, Cluster General Manager Africa and Business Development Africa for sub-Saharan Africa for the Taj brand.

Wernich adds that it is an honour to lead the brand during an evolution that will cater to every taste worldwide. Guests can expect sophisticated city stays, African bush experiences, and laid-back beach resorts.

Into the African wilderness

“Our expansion into the luxury African wilderness is a case in point,” Wernich says. Taj Hotels has acquired three bush lodges in the Greater Kruger National Park: the Taj Lion Kings Bush Lodge (currently under renovation) and the Taj Lion Kings River Lodge, both scheduled to open in the first quarters of 2026. Visitors can also look forward to Taj Lion Kings Hilltop Tented Camp later in 2026, with several additional properties set for 2027.

“Visitors who are already familiar with the Taj brand have an idea of what to expect: exquisite décor, outstanding food and sumptuous comfort, adding up to unabashed luxury, all underscored by our signature authentic hospitality and flawless service, with a safari twist,” Wernich says.

Wider regional expansion

This is the beginning. Taj Hotels is set to expand into southern and East Africa, with earmarked areas long regarded as ultimate safari destinations. The Taj name is set to join leading hospitality in Kenya’s Maasai Mara and the Serengeti in Tanzania, as well as Botswana and Zambia. “We will expand our infrastructure in East Africa to support our sub-Saharan portfolio, making it possible for travellers to explore and experience the best of the region with ease.”

Brand momentum and Cape Town update

With IHCL named the World’s Strongest Hotel Brand for 2025 by Brand Finance for the fourth time, the group continues on a winning path. Taj Cape Town has completed a revitalisation of rooms and suites, finishing a comprehensive refurbishment and offering guests an exceptional experience in the Mother City.

“There are so many wonderful opportunities facing us right now, and we’re looking forward to bringing them all to fruition so that our guests can enjoy unparalleled experiences throughout this one-of-a-kind region. With this expansion, Taj Hotels reaffirms its commitment to shaping Africa’s luxury tourism landscape, blending conservation, community engagement, and world-class hospitality for global travellers and visionary investors alike,” Wernich concludes.
