Rove SA recently hit the Garden Route for a local travel road trip — and our first stop set the tone perfectly. Just outside Knysna, Buffalo Bay is a tranquil coastal gem where rivers, dunes and beaches meet in one breathtaking landscape.

After a scenic drive through lush hills and coastal curves, we arrived at Goukamma Nature Reserve, ready to slow down and soak in the beauty of the Cape’s wild side.

Kayaking on the Goukamma River

Our morning began with a serene kayaking session on the Goukamma River, a calm stretch of water surrounded by indigenous vegetation and the sounds of birds. With the gentle rhythm of paddles on water and the smell of salt and fynbos in the air, it was a peaceful start to the day — the kind of stillness that makes you pause and breathe a little deeper.

Trails, Ponds and Ocean Views

After kayaking, we hopped on the pont and set off on one of Goukamma’s coastal walking trails. The sandy path winds through dunes and fynbos before opening onto a spectacular view of the Indian Ocean.

The hike was short and easy but filled with moments that reminded us why South Africa’s natural spaces are so special — clear air, crashing waves, and wide horizons that make you feel small in the best way possible.

Dinner by the Sea

As the sun dipped below the horizon, we headed to Wildside Beach Restaurant — a local favourite perched right on the sand. With our feet buried in warm beach sand and the sound of waves rolling in, we enjoyed a seafood feast to remember.

If you go, order the seafood platter and the mussel pot starter — both are fresh, flavourful and ideally suited to the seaside setting. Paired with a glass of local wine, it’s a slice of coastal bliss.

A Night Under the Stars

That night, we stayed inside Goukamma Nature Reserve, where the only sounds were the wind, the ocean, and the occasional night bird. With no signal or Wi-Fi, the silence was complete — and refreshing.

There’s something special about being completely disconnected, surrounded by nature and stars. It’s the kind of peace you don’t realise you’ve been missing until you find it.
